VINIUM™ is a super premium, eco-sensitive winery, located in Sonoma's Alexander Valley, that is ushering in a new era of high-quality and sustainability for the American wine industry.
Founded by industry veterans Richard Cardoza and renowned winemaker George Bursick, VINIUM™ is introducing a change in wine habits, packaging, distribution and dispensing for a new generation of super-premium wine consumers.
From Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, VINIUM™ delivers our wines direct to our retail partner WHOLE FOODS MARKET or direct to your door, replacing bottles and corks with alternative packaging and dispensing systems that keep wines fresh for up to six weeks after opening.
Richard Cardoza - Founder
For 23 years, Richard Cardoza operated the highly successful Massachusetts retail chain Cardoza’s Wine & Spirits as well as Top Shelf Beverage Catering and Cork Wine & Tapas Bar with a passion of bringing people together through wine, while offering the highest quality and values available.
Involved with growing California wine brands since the late 1980’s through 2010, Richard created long standing relationships with top California winemakers and vineyard owners giving him a direct line to a supply of the highest quality wines available.
In 2010, Richard sold his retail stores to pursue his passion of wine blending and branding by forming the distribution company Négociant Direct. The genesis of VINIUM™ came in the Fall of 2011, with Richard, and his son Nicholas taking a leisurely stroll through the Boston Common Park.
Nicholas, who had spent the past several years in Europe and South America, questioned the sustainability of the wine distribution process in the US, and asked if it were possible to sell wine direct from the barrel, like he had seen in Italy and France. A question that provoked much thought and research for the winery of the future.
By July of 2012 a new business model had been created and Negociant Direct became VINIUM™; a vertically integrated, eco-conscious winery focusing on the finest quality Caliifornia wines, packaged in the most current and sustainable packaging, stewarding it through transportation and marketing it direct to consumer in our own proprietary wine barrel.
VINIUM™ in essence would become the Winery, Wholesaler and Retailer bringing wine direct from our winery to the consumer with a new age approach. The sustainability of wine packaging and distribution became the lens with which all business decisions were made, thus VINIUM™, the winery of the future, came to fruition.In January of 2014 VINIUM formed a strategic alliance with WHOLE FOODS MARKET to sell the wines at retail.
George Bursick - Winemaker
George Bursick is among the generation of winemaker’s who have shaped the current era in California’s wine industry to the high level it is today. Alongside George, Kathy Corison, Paul Hobbs, John Konsgaard, Mike Martini, Doug Nalle, David Ramey, Jack Stuart and others encouraged a revolution on how wine is made in California.
George began his first solo winemaking job at McDowell Valley Vineyards in Mendocino County. There he became the first winemaker to produce Syrah in California. After nine years, George became Director of Winemaking at Ferrari-Carano vineyards in Sonoma Valley.
Wine Spectator Magazine named George's 1985 Ferrari-Carano Chardonnay the “#1 Wine in the World.” This transformed Ferrari-Carano from just another struggling winery to a major name in California wine, which resulted in big restaurant sales and high name recognition. Since receiving this prestigious honor from Wine Spectator, George has gone on to achieve countless awards, and accolades on behalf of Ferrari-Carano.
George joined J Vineyards & Winery, a well-respected brand that was at a crossroad, as VP of Winemaking. George ushered J Vineyards & Winery into a new era of wine production focused on cool-climate, site-specific Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Of his future George says, "I am amazed at the ever-evolving potential of great vineyards in Northern California, especially Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. California’s greatest wines are still to be made. I plan to do my part in raising the bar at VINIUM™, my new home, and to help usher the industry into a greener age."
Bottles and corks are not necessary for wine that do not require aging. In the United States 94% of wines are consumed within 48 hours of purchasing.
In 2013 U.S. consumers drank a whopping 380 million cases of wine or 3.8 billion bottles. The EPA estimates that 80 percent of those wine bottles will end up in U.S. landfills.
Because production of a typical 750ml wine bottle and cork emits about 15 oz of CO2 into the earths atmosphere, the discarded bottle emissions equal appromimately 4,000,000,000 pounds of greenhouse gasses or the equivalent gases from 285,000 automobiles each year or the emissions from the electricity use of 185,000 homes for a year.The inevitable transition from wine bottles to more sustainable wine packaging is as unstoppable as vinyl records through to Tapes/CD’s and now MP3’s.
